Giving צדקה when poor, the northern border at עכו, and whether a boat counts as ארץ ישראל
Overview
The גמרא finishes a teaching from a פסוק in נחום: even a poor person who lives on צדקה should give צדקה, and then he will no longer be shown signs of poverty. It then turns to the משנה's statement of רבי יהודה that עכו is like the north of ארץ ישראל. A ברייתא seems to say ארץ ישראל reaches further north, up to כזיב. אביי answers that only a narrow strip of land runs north past עכו, and the גמרא shows from a פסוק in שופטים that a narrow road can serve as a landmark. Next, two ברייתות disagree about whether a גט brought on a boat counts as being brought in ארץ ישראל or in חוצה לארץ. רבי ירמיה says they follow a מחלוקת between רבי יהודה and the רבנן about soil carried on a boat. אביי says both follow רבי יהודה: a boat scraping the sea floor counts as ארץ ישראל, and a floating boat does not. רבי זירא applies the same מחלוקת to a pot with a hole resting on pegs. רבא starts to push back, and his reasoning continues on the next amud.
