Omens and good signs; the קטורת: liability for blending it, מעילה after a מצוה is done, its recipe, and the rule that it is prepared only in the מקדש

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a side discussion about omens. A traveler's reflection test is rejected because a bad result could make him lose heart. אביי then teaches the ראש השנה סימנים, and רב משרשיא gives his sons advice about learning and living. The amud then shows that kings anointed from a horn had lasting kingdoms. Next the גמרא returns to the משנה's case of one who blends the קטורת: blending it to smell brings כרת, and smelling it is מעילה. That leads to a discussion of whether there is מעילה once an item's מצוה is done, and of the rule that two פסוקים teaching the same thing do not set a general rule, both according to the רבנן and according to רבי דוסא. A ברייתא then gives the full recipe of the קטורת, which supports רבי יוסי ברבי חנינא's rule that all its preparation must be done in the מקדש. A challenge from a משנה about consecrated property is answered first by רבי אושעיא and then, after רב יוסף rejects that answer, by רב יוסף himself. The amud ends by explaining how much קטורת was made each year and how the leftover was given to the craftsmen as wages.
