Love for ארץ ישראל and the days of the משיח: the closing lines of מסכת כתובות

Overview

This is the last עמוד of מסכת כתובות. The גמרא finishes its list of חכמים who showed love for ארץ ישראל. Some kept moving between sun and shade so they would never complain about the land, and רבי חייא בר גמדא would roll in its dust, based on a פסוק in תהלים. The גמרא then describes the generation when בן דוד comes. There will be accusations against תלמידי חכמים, שמואל adds that there will be refining after refining, and רב יוסף teaches that there will be plunderers who are plundered in turn. The מסכת ends on a hopeful note: רב teaches that one day every barren tree in ארץ ישראל will bear fruit. The הדרן then closes the פרק and the whole מסכת.
