How to read a dying man's instructions and a field set aside for a widow's support, then the start of a new chapter: a husband may add to the כתובה, and the extra counts as the כתובה itself.
Overview
The amud opens with a short case. A father said to give his daughter 400 זוז worth of wine, the wine went up in value, and רב יוסף rules that the extra goes to the יתומים. Next comes a story about רבי יוחנן's relatives, whose father's wife spent too much on her support. רבי יוחנן advised setting aside a field for her, but ריש לקיש ruled that this only added to her support, and רבי יוחנן said he could not overrule an equal. רבי אבהו then explains that it depends on the wording: "לִמְזוֹנוֹת" adds to her support, while "בִּמְזוֹנוֹת" caps it. After the הדרן closing פרק נערה, a new משנה teaches that a husband may add any amount to the basic כתובה. The משנה also records disputes about collecting the extra after אירוסין and about lowering the basic amount. The גמרא explains why the משנה had to say adding is allowed. It then learns from the word 'add' that the extra counts as the כתובה itself, which matters in six practical cases.
