The end of the נקדימון story, valuing gold and local goods for the כתובה, and the minimum dowry for a bride or an orphan girl
Overview
The amud opens by finishing the story of נקדימון בן גוריון. The גמרא explains why his family lost its wealth even though he gave צדקה, and a ברייתא describes his daughter's terrible poverty. The גמרא then returns to the כתובה. רבי יוחנן rules that gold in a dowry is written at its exact value. Two ברייתות are brought against him, and the גמרא works through them, ending by reading 'gold is like utensils' as talking about broken gold or gold granules. Next comes a list of goods that count like money in particular places, and רבא explains why he changed his mind about the money pouches of מחוזא. A new משנה sets a minimum dowry of fifty זוז for a daughter or an orphan girl, and אביי proves these are small local coins. Finally a ברייתא teaches that an orphan girl is supported before an orphan boy, and a second case about the two orphans begins and continues on the next amud.
