A husband selling the produce of his wife's land, and the property and כתובה rights of a שומרת יבם
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a question: may a husband sell the produce of his wife's land, given that the Rabbis gave him that produce only for רווח ביתא, the benefit of the household? Two students report opposite rulings in רבא's name. רב פפא shows that the report saying the sale works was only guessed from a story about a maidservant, and that guess is rejected. The הלכה is that such a sale does nothing. אביי says this protects the land from being ruined, and רבא says it is because the household gains nothing. The גמרא then gives cases where their two reasons lead to different results. Next comes a new משנה about a שומרת יבם: her property, who inherits from her if she dies, what happens to her dead husband's money and produce, and how her כתובה works after יבום. The גמרא begins by asking who must pay to bury a שומרת יבם who died. רב עמרם starts to answer from a ברייתא, which continues on the next amud.
