The soldiers' גט in דוד's wars, and whether a husband is believed with a claim of פתח פתוח, to forbid his wife or to take away her כתובה

Overview

This amud opens with the rule that every soldier in the wars of בית דוד wrote his wife a גט כריתות before leaving. The source is the פסוק 'ואת ערבתם תקח,' which רב יוסף reads as the marriage bond. The גמרא then turns to a husband's claim of פתח פתוח, that he found his bride was not a virgin. אביי tries to prove from the rule that a בתולה marries on Wednesday that this claim is believed to forbid her to him, as רבי אלעזר holds. The proof is rejected, because the משנה may be talking about a claim of 'no blood.' Next, רב יהודה quotes שמואל: a husband who claims פתח פתוח is believed to make his wife lose her כתובה. רב יוסף asks why שמואל needs to say this, since the משנה about a groom eating at his father-in-law's house in יהודה seems to teach it already. That proof is rejected the same way: the משנה may be about a claim of 'no blood,' so שמואל's ruling teaches something new.
