How an עבד עברי is acquired with money, and the argument over מוכר עצמו versus one sold by בית דין

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a discussion about the word הנעל in חליצה: the extra ה lets the word teach two lessons. Then a new משנה lists how an עבד עברי is acquired and goes free, adds the extra way an אמה עבריה goes free, and explains how a נרצע goes free. The גמרא looks for the source that a Hebrew slave is acquired with money. It moves step by step: from a slave sold to a נכרי, to the אמה עבריה (והפדה), to the male slave (a היקש), and finally to one who sells himself. That last case is learned either from the גזירה שוה of שכיר שכיר or from the 'ו' of וכי תשיג. The גמרא asks which תנא rejects שכיר שכיר and brings a ברייתא where the תנא קמא and רבי אלעזר argue about four differences between מוכר עצמו and one sold by בית דין. רב טביומי in the name of אביי says that everyone accepts the גזירה שוה. On his view the differences come from specific פסוקים, like ועבדך שש שנים for the six-year limit and אזנו for piercing.
