The end of the dispute about castration blemishes, and a new משנה on acquiring animals by מסירה, הגבהה or משיכה, including how an elephant can be acquired according to רבי שמעון.

Overview

The גמרא first shows that its earlier question about damage to the testicles is like a dispute between תנאים about the blemishes in ויקרא. There are three views: רבי יהודה, רבי אליעזר בן יעקב and רבי יוסי. Then a new משנה teaches how animals are acquired: a large animal by מסירה, and a small one by הגבהה, or by משיכה according to the חכמים. רב teaches that even a large animal is acquired by משיכה. שמואל challenges him from our משנה and from רב's own earlier ruling. רב's students answer that רב changed his mind and follows the חכמים of a ברייתא, where רבי שמעון says every animal needs הגבהה. רב יוסף asks how an elephant could ever be acquired according to רבי שמעון. אביי answers: by חליפין, or by renting its spot. רבי זירא adds that the buyer can put four of his vessels under its feet. The גמרא then shows that this case is set in a סימטא, so it proves nothing about a buyer's vessel in the seller's domain.
