Betrothing with מעשר שני and הקדש: רבי יוחנן's two reasons, and רב חסדא's rule that a mistaken use of הקדש takes no effect

Overview

This amud first finishes a discussion about מעשר. The גמרא asks why a separate verse is needed, and רבין סבא answers that the word "הוא" teaches that the item stays in its holy state. Next comes the משנה's argument about betrothing with הקדש. רבי מאיר says it works if done on purpose, and רבי יהודה says it works if done by mistake. רבי יעקב reports two reasons from רבי יוחנן for the cases where the woman is not betrothed. In one case only she objects, and in the other they both object. רבי ירמיה and רבי יעקב each match these reasons to מעשר and הקדש in opposite ways. Then רב חסדא rules that, for רבי מאיר, a mistaken use of הקדש money does nothing: the money stays holy, and even a purchase does not take effect. A challenge from a משנה about a storekeeper is answered: there רבי מאיר was only arguing on רבי יהודה's terms. The amud ends as רב begins to explain the reasons behind the משנה's dispute, and his words continue on the next amud.

But don't you understand it by itself from it?

Ravin the Elder explained it before Rav:

אָמַר קְרָא: ״הוּא״

The verse says: "It is"

– בַּהֲוָיָיתוֹ יְהֵא.

As it is, it shall be.
