Overview

The amud opens by defining the fourth special Shabbat before פסח: the Shabbat of the week in which ראש חודש ניסן falls, even if ראש חודש is on Friday. The גמרא then asks what 'we return to the order' on the fifth Shabbat means. רבי אמי says the order of weekly Torah portions, and רבי ירמיה says the order of הפטרות. אביי supports רבי אמי from the משנה 'לכל מפסיקין', since weekday special days have a Torah reading but no הפטרה. רבי ירמיה answers that on שבת the interrupted order is the הפטרות and on weekdays it is the Torah reading. The גמרא then asks why fast days interrupt the reading at all, and answers that the morning of a public fast is taken up by a communal gathering, as רב הונא said. אביי describes the fast-day schedule: the first half of the day examining the town's conduct, then a quarter for reading and a quarter for prayer, proven from verses in נחמיה and עזרא. Finally, a new משנה begins listing the Torah readings for each festival and special day, and its last entry, fast days, continues on the next amud.

כֹּל שֶׁחָל רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ נִיסָן

Any one in which the New Moon of Nisan falls

לִהְיוֹת בְּתוֹכָהּ,

to occur within its week,

וַאֲפִילּוּ בְּעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת.

and even if it falls on Friday.
