Learning the rules of מעילה from תרומה through the word חטא, and widening them with 'תִּמְעֹל מַעַל'

Overview

This amud finishes a ברייתא that defines מעילה as 'change', quoting a פסוק that uses מעילה for turning to idol worship. The ברייתא then asks about unclear cases: damage without benefit, benefit without damage, things attached to the ground, and an agent who carried out his mission. It answers with a גזירה שוה, because the word חטא appears both by תרומה and by מעילה. So every condition of the תרומה sin carries over. Damage and benefit must go together, by the same person, from the same item, at the same time, with a detached item, and a successful agent makes the sender liable. Next the ברייתא repeatedly asks whether limits from תרומה should also restrict מעילה. Each time the extra words 'תִּמְעֹל מַעַל' teach 'in any case'. This brings in benefit from items that cannot be damaged, eating and benefit by different people adding up, and separate eatings joining even years apart. The amud ends as the ברייתא begins one more such question, which continues on the next amud.
