An אשם תלוי that turns out to be unneeded, חיבת הקודש and food impurity, and a מנחה brought in a different pan or number of vessels than vowed
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a משנה about an אשם תלוי, the offering brought when a person is unsure whether he sinned, for an owner who then learns he did not sin. The ruling depends on the stage he reached: before slaughter, after slaughter, or after the blood was sprinkled. רבי יוסי holds that even blood still in the cup is sprinkled and the meat is eaten. רבא explains this through רבי שמעון's rule that blood ready to be sprinkled counts as already sprinkled. Scholars in ארץ ישראל give a different reason: a כלי שרת sanctifies even disqualified items. רב אשי then asks why נותר and the פרה can become impure as food if they are as good as burned. רב כהנא answers that חיבת הקודש makes them able to become impure, and the גמרא adds that on the rabbinic level this impurity is even counted in levels. A new משנה then deals with someone who promised a מנחה in one kind of pan, or in one vessel versus two, and brought it differently. The גמרא explains why both kinds of change had to be taught, brings רבי שמעון's dissent, and has אביי explain that the vessel sanctifies the flour enough to become פסולה. Finally, אביי begins a new statement limiting the משנה, which continues on the next amud.
