פיגול intent during only part of the מתיר, and whether a כהן's first intention carries over to later acts (רב against שמואל)
Overview
This amud deals with offerings that become permitted through two things together, like the קומץ and the לבונה of a מנחה. In the משנה, רבי מאיר holds that פיגול intent during just one of them brings כרת. חכמים say there is no כרת unless the intent covers the entire מתיר. They agree when there is only one מתיר, and the same argument applies to the two כבשים of שבועות and the two בזיכין of לחם הפנים. In the גמרא, רב says the argument is only when the intent came last. If the intent was during the קומץ, everyone agrees it is פיגול, because a person acts on his first intention. שמואל says they argue either way. The גמרא challenges רב twice from ברייתות. The first one, about the קומץ, is answered by רב חנינא: two different כהנים did the two parts. The second ברייתא, about blood placed inside on יום הכיפורים, is answered by רבא and then by רב אשי. Each explains that the כהן repeated his intention, which shows it was not carrying over on its own.

The steps (18)
- StatementImproper intent during only the handful or only the frankincense
- StatementThe Sages agree when the handful is the only permitting factor
- StatementThe same argument for the two lambs and the two frankincense bowls
- StatementIntent about the slaughtered lamb itself versus intent about the other lamb
- Statementרב limits the dispute to silence first, then intent
- Statementשמואל says the dispute applies in both orders
- ChallengeA ברייתא records the dispute even when the intent was on the קומץ
- ChallengeThe challenge spelled out: intent first, silence second, and they still argue
- Resolutionרבא: the לבונה had already been burned earlier
- RejectionTwo reasons רבא's answer fails
- Resolutionרב חנינא: two different people, two separate minds
- ProofA new proof begins: blood placed on the outer מזבח
- ProofThe ברייתא continues: inner-altar blood placements
- ProofThe point of the proof: they argue even with intent in just one set
- RejectionThe two-priests answer may not work here
- Resolutionרבא: he repeated the intention in the third set
- Challengeרב אשי: The ברייתא Never Mentions Silence
- Resolutionרב אשי: He Repeated the Intention in the First Three
