Does the ציץ make an impure offering acceptable when something was done on purpose? The גמרא gives four ways to settle two ברייתות that disagree.

Overview

An earlier ברייתא ruled that in some cases an impure offering is 'not accepted', but a second ברייתא says the ציץ makes impure blood, meat and fat acceptable even when done on purpose. רב יוסף answers that the lenient ברייתא is רבי יוסי, who does not penalize deliberate wrongdoing, as seen with תרומה. The גמרא objects that רבי יוסי holds the ציץ does not work for eaten parts, and tries to save the answer by reversing the names. רב ששת rejects the reversal with a long ברייתא about eating קדשים while impure: it holds that sprinkling does not work for meat that left the courtyard, which is רבי אליעזר's view, and it uses the ציץ for eaten parts. So רב חסדא answers instead that the lenient ברייתא is רבי אליעזר, who also does not penalize, even for קדשים. Finally רבינא and רב שילא each split the cases differently: one says only sprinkling on purpose ruins the offering, and the other says only making it impure on purpose does.

Opening lines

לֹא הוּרְצָה.

It is not accepted.

ורְמִינְהִי:

And they raised a contradiction:

עַל מָה הַצִּיץ מְרַצֶּה?

For what does the frontplate effect acceptance?

עַל הַדָּם וְעַל הַבָּשָׂר

For the blood and for the flesh

The steps (28)

  1. StatementEnd of the earlier teaching: the offering is not accepted
  2. ChallengeA second teaching says the frontplate works even for deliberate impurity
  3. Resolutionרב יוסף: the two teachings follow different opinions
  4. ProofProof from separating תרומה from impure produce
  5. ChallengeNot penalizing is not the same as the frontplate working for eaten parts
  6. Proofרבי יוסי actually holds the frontplate does not work for eaten parts
  7. ResolutionReverse the two opinions
  8. Challengeרב ששת asks whether the opinions can really be reversed
  9. ProofLiability applies only to meat already permitted to pure people
  10. ChallengeMaybe any meat pure people cannot eat is exempt
  11. ResolutionThe words 'that belong to ה׳' include them
  12. ChallengeShould פיגול and נותר also be included?
  13. Challengeנותר is the same as לן, so the question is reworded
  14. Resolution'From the peace offering' excludes פיגול
  15. QuestionWhy include these and exclude those?
  16. ResponseThe difference is a period of fitness
  17. ChallengeMeat that became impure before the sprinkling
  18. ResolutionThe ציץ makes it acceptable
  19. ProofImpurity yes, leaving the courtyard no
  20. ProofThe ברייתא follows רבי אליעזר, so the ציץ helps for eating
  21. Resolutionרב חסדא: the two ברייתות follow different opinions
  22. ChallengeDoes רבי אליעזר also not penalize someone who acted on purpose?
  23. ResolutionYes: רבי אליעזר does not penalize, as we see with תרומה
  24. ChallengeMaybe תרומה is different because it is lighter than קדשים
  25. ResolutionWho else could the lenient ברייתא belong to?
  26. Resolutionרבינא: the impurity versus the sprinkling
  27. Resolutionרב שילא's opposite way of settling the contradiction
  28. ResolutionHow רב שילא reads the ברייתא that accepts impurity on purpose
