תפילין: the ברכות, the order of putting on and taking off, and the times for wearing them
Overview
רב חסדא rules that if someone talks between putting on the arm תפילין and the head תפילין, he must say a ברכה again. The גמרא asks how this fits with רבי יוחנן, who gives a separate ברכה for each one. אביי and רבא answer that without talking you say one ברכה, and after talking you say two. A ברייתא adds that talking in between is a sin, serious enough to send a man home from the army. Another ברייתא teaches the order: put on the arm תפילין first and take off the head תפילין first. The arm-first rule comes from the order of the פסוק, and רבה learns from 'והיו' that while the head תפילין is on, both must be on. A further ברייתא teaches that the ברכה is said when the time for the מצוה arrives, and then gives three opinions on how late תפילין may be worn. רב נחמן's ruling on רבי יעקב's view is reported in two opposite versions.
Opening lines
אָמַר רַב חִסְדָּא:
Rav Chisda said:
סָח בֵּין תְּפִילָּה לִתְפִילָּה
If one spoke between one tefillah and the other tefillah,
חוֹזֵר וּמְבָרֵךְ.
he goes back and recites a blessing.
סָח – אִין, לֹא סָח – לָא?
If he spoke, yes; if he did not speak, no?
