Mourning and the רגל: how the festival cancels שבעה and שלשים, אבא שאול's מקצת היום ככולו, the source for שלשים, and whether festival days count toward שלשים
Overview
The amud opens with a ברייתא: a רגל cancels שבעה if the mourner kept three days before it, and cancels שלשים if he kept eight. The תנא קמא says he must shave on ערב הרגל or wait until after שלשים. אבא שאול lets him shave after the festival, because he holds מקצת היום ככולו, so the seventh day counts twice. רב's rule that a mourner may bathe once the comforters leave follows אבא שאול. אביי, רבא and the נהרדעי disagree on how far we follow אבא שאול on the seventh and thirtieth days. The נהרדעי rely on שמואל's rule that in mourning we follow the lenient view. The גמרא learns the thirty days from a נזיר through the word פרע, and learns the נזיר's thirty days from the גימטריא of יהיה. Everyone agrees that if the third day falls on ערב הרגל, the mourner may not bathe until evening. Finally, אביי asks רבא whether festival days count toward שלשים, רבא says they do not, and אביי begins challenging him from a ברייתא that continues on the next amud.
