How late-arriving mourners count the seven days, the final הלכה on רבי שמעון's mourning rule (with a related ruling on טריפות), and rules that set parents apart from other relatives.
Overview
The גמרא asks what happens when the head of the household goes to the cemetery and another relative arrives at the house of mourning while he is away. It answers with a three-day rule: if he came back within three days, the newcomer counts with the family, and if not, the newcomer counts on his own. רב gave the same instruction to the family of הצלבוני. רבא adds that mourners who do not follow the coffin to burial start counting when they turn back at the city gate. רבי שמעון holds that a mourner who arrives from nearby even on the seventh day finishes with the family, and רבי limits this to a case where comforters are still in the house. Whether comforters who started to get up still count stays a תיקו. A report that רבי יוחנן ruled like רבן שמעון בן גמליאל in טריפות and like רבי שמעון in mourning is checked at its source. The טריפות half turns out to be backwards, and the mourning half is a dispute. The גמרא concludes that the הלכה is not like רבן שמעון בן גמליאל in טריפות, but is like רבי שמעון in mourning, because we follow the lenient view in אבל. Finally, a ברייתא teaches that hurrying a burial is praised for most relatives but improper for a parent, except on ערב שבת or ערב יום טוב, and it begins a rule about cutting back on business that continues on the next amud.
