Weddings on ערב הרגל, the source for אין מערבין שמחה בשמחה, and the dedication of שלמה's מקדש
Overview
A ברייתא allows weddings on ערב הרגל. The גמרא shows this fits all three reasons for banning weddings on חול המועד: the main joy and the main work are only on the wedding day, and nobody delays his wedding for just one day. Next the גמרא looks for the source of אין מערבין שמחה בשמחה. It first tries to prove it from שלמה keeping the dedication of the בית המקדש separate from סוכות, but that proof is rejected. The real source turns out to be the extra words 'seven days and seven days' in the פסוק. That celebration went through יום הכיפורים, and the people relied on a קל וחומר from the משכן, whose offerings were brought even on שבת. The גמרא proves the משכן point from the double 'day' wording in two פסוקים, and carries it over to the מקדש. A פסוק shows that ישראל were forgiven, and that the gates of the מקדש opened only in דוד's merit, proving he was forgiven too. The amud ends with students of רבי שמעון בן יוחי, who learn from שלמה that a student must take leave of his teacher again. They then resolve a contradiction in משלי, and that answer finishes on the next amud.
