Who wrote the משנה about the unidentified stranger, the vows about a כּוֹי, and the start of the new פרק on the three things forbidden to a נזיר.
Overview
The amud opens by asking who wrote the משנה about six people who vowed נזירות on the identity of an approaching stranger. That משנה says no one is a נזיר if the stranger turned back unidentified. The גמרא rejects רבי טרפון as the author, because he holds that such a vow never takes effect at all. It names רבי יהודה instead, who is lenient when a grain heap is lost and its size can never be checked. רבי שמעון is strict in both cases. A new משנה then describes people making opposite נזירות vows about whether a כּוֹי is a חיה or a בהמה, and it rules that all of them are נזירים. The גמרא compares two ברייתות, one counting nine נזירים and one counting nine terms of נזירות. רב ששת explains how a single person can carry nine terms. The פרק בית שמאי then ends, and a new פרק opens with the three things forbidden to a נזיר: טומאה, shaving, and grapevine products.
