Overview

The amud opens with the end of a statement that points to the נזיר verse 'from pits to grape skin' as the model of a פרט. The גמרא asks how רבי אלעזר בן עזריה can treat that phrase as a detail, since he uses it to teach that a נזיר is liable only for two pits and a skin. The first answer is that he follows רבי אלעזר's method of מיעט וריבה. The second answer is that he follows the רבנן. The phrase's place after the כלל makes it the פרט, and its odd wording, plural pits with a singular skin, teaches his minimum amount. The גמרא then asks where רבי אלעזר himself learns the method of פרט וכלל ופרט. רבי אבהו says it comes from the verse about giving animals to a friend to guard. רבא says it comes from the verse about bringing a קרבן from the flock. רב יהודה מדיסקרתא asks רבא why he does not use an earlier verse in the same chapter, 'from the animals, from the herd and the flock.' רבא begins to explain why that verse cannot serve, and his answer continues on the next amud.
