Whether a plain נזירות lasts 30 days (רב מתנא) or 29 days (בר פדא), tested against the wording and rulings of the משנה.

Overview

Earlier on the דף, רב מתנא said a plain נזירות lasts 30 days, and בר פדא said it lasts 29 days, based on how many times the word נזיר or נזר appears in the פרשה. First בר פדא defends his count: at least one of those words is free just for counting, so all of them count, even the ones that also teach other lessons. Then the גמרא tests both views against the משנה. The משנה says a plain נזירות is 'thirty days', and בר פדא explains that day 30 is included because the נזיר shaves and brings his קרבנות then. Another משנה says the נזיר shaves on day 31. בר פדא answers from the end of that משנה, which says shaving on day 30 still counts. That same line now seems to be a problem for רב מתנא, and he answers with the rule מקצת היום ככולו, that part of a day counts like the whole day. When the משנה says someone who vowed 'thirty days' cannot shave on day 30, the גמרא explains that he said 'complete' days. Finally, the גמרא brings the case of two נזירויות, with shaving on day 31 and day 61, which fits רב מתנא. The challenge to בר פדא from that case continues on the next amud.
