What the words אִישׁ and כִּי יַפְלִיא in the פסוקים of ערכין and נזיר come to teach: גוים, a מופלא סמוך לאיש, and finally a Torah hint for הֶיתֵּר נְדָרִים.

Overview

The גמרא rejects a proposal about what the פסוק of נזיר excludes for גוים, because רבי יוחנן says that rule is a הלכה למשה מסיני. It then asks why ערכין needs the word אִישׁ to include גוים, since a היקש to נדרים and a ברייתא on אִישׁ אִישׁ already include them. The answer is that אִישׁ includes a מופלא סמוך לאיש, and according to the view that this law is only דרבנן, it includes a near-adult גוי. That answer fits only one view about whether גוים can be valued or can make the vow. For the other view, רב אדא בר אהבה says כִּי יַפְלִיא teaches that an adult גוי who cannot clearly express a vow cannot make one. Next the גמרא asks why כִּי יַפְלִיא is written in נזיר. It tries ידים שאינן מוכיחות, which fits only אביי, and then רבי טרפון's rule, which the רבנן reject. Finally it says the phrase is needed for רבי אליעזר, who learns הֶיתֵּר נְדָרִים from the doubled כִּי יַפְלִא: one for forbidding and one for releasing.

Opening lines

יָכוֹל לֹא יְהוּ נְזִירִין —

One might think that they would not be nazirites at all —

תַּלְמוּד לוֹמַר: ״אִישׁ״!

therefore the verse says: 'Man'!

הָאִיתְּמַר אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן:

But wasn't it stated that Rabbi Yochanan said:

הֲלָכָה הִיא בְּנָזִיר.

It is a halacha (passed down from Moshe) regarding a nazir.
