Cancelling future vows on ראש השנה, keeping it out of public lectures, and whether the רבנן disagree with רבי אליעזר בן יעקב

Overview

The גמרא first fills in missing words in the משנה, splitting it into two rules. Pressing a friend with a vow to eat with you is just a נדרי זירוזין, a vow of urging. Separately, anyone who wants his vows for the year to have no force can declare on ראש השנה that all his future vows are cancelled. The גמרא asks how the משנה's condition, 'as long as he remembers at the time of the vow,' can work: if he remembers and vows anyway, he has dropped his condition. אביי answers by changing the wording to 'as long as he does NOT remember.' רבא keeps the wording and explains that he remembers there was a condition but not what it covered, so the vow is cancelled only if he says he is vowing based on his earlier intention. רבא then scolds רב הונא בר חיננא for planning to teach this method in a public lecture, since the תנא hid it so people would not treat vows lightly. Finally, the גמרא asks whether the רבנן disagree with רבי אליעזר בן יעקב, and if so, whether the הלכה follows him. It begins a proof from a later משנה, which continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

חַסּוֹרֵי מִיחַסְּרָא וְהָכִי קָתָנֵי:

The משנה is missing words, and this is what it teaches:

הָרוֹצֶה שֶׁיֹּאכַל אֶצְלוֹ חֲבֵירוֹ

One who wants his friend to eat with him

וּמְסָרֵב בּוֹ וּמַדִּירוֹ —

and presses him and makes a vow about him,

נִדְרֵי זֵירוּזִין הוּא.

this is a vow of urging.
