A father who forbids his property to his son but wants a future scholarly grandson to inherit: does 'קני על מנת להקנות' (acquire in order to pass it on) work?
Overview
A man forbade his possessions to his son, who stole flax. He said that if his grandson became a תלמיד חכם, the son should acquire the property and then pass it to the grandson. The פומבדיתאי say this fails, because 'acquire in order to transfer' does not acquire. רב נחמן says it works, and he proves it from קנין סודר. רב אשי rejects that proof for two reasons: the cloth may really be acquired, and a סודר takes effect right away, while here the transfer only happens much later. רבא challenges רב נחמן from the בית חורון gift in the משנה, which did not work. רב נחמן answers that the meal showed the gift was not real, or that the משנה follows רבי אליעזר's strict view. The גמרא then asks whether the word 'כל' in the משנה includes the father's case. It answers that 'כל' includes רבא's later version instead, and the chapter השותפין ends with the הדרן.
