Reading vows by what the person meant: 'until אדר' in a leap year, vows 'until' a holiday, and vows whose purpose limits or cancels them
Overview
The גמרא finishes its discussion of a vow 'until ראש חודש אדר.' It brings a ברייתא and shows that, in a leap year, the meaning depends on whether the person knew the year had two אדרs. If he knew, he meant the second אדר; if not, the first. Then a new משנה begins. רבי יהודה and his son רבי יוסי teach that a vow off a food 'until' a holiday ends right when people normally eat that food: wine on פסח night, meat before the fast, garlic on שבת night. The משנה then turns to vows whose purpose is obvious. A vow made to push a friend to accept a gift can be released without a חכם, and רבי מאיר and the חכמים argue about a vow demanding that the friend give a gift. Finally, strong-sounding vows made to fend off a marriage or a meal only block the marriage or the meal. The chapter קונם יין then closes with the הדרן.
Opening lines
וְהָתַנְיָא: ״עַד רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ אֲדָר״
And so it is taught: 'Until the New Moon of אדר'
— עַד רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ אֲדָר הָרִאשׁוֹן,
— the vow lasts until the New Moon of the first אדר;
אִם הָיְתָה שָׁנָה מְעוּבֶּרֶת —
if it was a leap year —
עַד רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ אֲדָר הַשֵּׁנִי.
until the New Moon of the second אדר.
