Birth days counting toward a זבה's clean days, and the impurity of דם הנדה whether moist or dry

Overview

The amud opens with a question: a זבה gives birth, and she sees no blood during the days of impurity after the birth. Do those days count toward her seven clean days for זיבה? רב כהנא brings a ברייתא about a woman who miscarried something unknown, which says those days do count. רב פפא tries to reject the proof, but רב הונא בריה דרב יהושע shows the rejection fails, and the גמרא concludes that the days count. The ברייתא then works out how many days a woman with a fixed cycle of bleeding and clean days may be with her husband. Then the chapter בא סימן ends, and a new chapter opens with a משנה. The משנה teaches that דם הנדה and בשר המת make things impure even when dry, while other substances stay impure only while moist, unless they can be soaked back to their original form. The גמרא finds verses for the impurity of דם הנדה, including dry blood. It then explains, from the word ״היא״, that her blood does not make a מִשְׁכָּב וּמוֹשָׁב impure.

  26. ProofThe ברייתא's קל וחומר: a צרעת stone should make a bed and seat impure
  27. ProofThe ברייתא's conclusion: the word ״הזב״ excludes the stone
  28. ChallengeThe inference: without the verse, the stone would make a bed and seat impure
  29. ResolutionThe answer: just as ״הזב״ excludes the stone, ״היא״ excludes her blood
