Whether purity depends on קפידא, and the dispute between רֵישׁ לָקִישׁ and רבי יוחנן over whether absorbed impure liquid makes things טמא before it comes out.

Overview

רבי אבא asks רב אשי whether purity really depends on קפידא, whether the owner minds a stain. רב אשי says yes. He proves it from רבי חייא: even definite נדה blood is nullified once the seven cleaning substances are applied. The גמרא then quotes a משנה in כלים: a זב's pottery soaked with impure liquid falls into an oven, and once the oven is heated, the oven is טמא. רֵישׁ לָקִישׁ says severe liquids make the oven טמא even without heating. רבי יוחנן says heating is always needed, because absorbed liquid does not count until it comes out. רבי יוחנן challenges him from stains, from רבי חייא, and from corpse blood absorbed in a garment. רֵישׁ לָקִישׁ's side answers that those cases are rabbinic, or rejects the source. Then רֵישׁ לָקִישׁ challenges רבי יוחנן from a משנה about absorbed liquid. רב פפא answers by sorting the cases by whether the liquid can come out and whether the owner cares. His explanation of רבי יוחנן's reasoning continues on the next amud.
