Baking מצה on פסח: the meaning of פת עבה, shaped מצה, חלה for pot-made and sun-baked dough, and the definition of half-baked מצה.
Overview
This amud opens at the end of a dispute: בית שמאי forbid baking פת עבה and בית הלל permit it. רב הונא says פת עבה means bread a טפח thick, like לחם הפנים. רב יוסף rejects that comparison, listing five ways baking in the בית המקדש was faster and safer than baking at home. Instead, פת עבה is defined as a large batch of bread, and the ban is explained as unnecessary work on any יום טוב, not only on פסח. Next, a ברייתא teaches that shaped מצה fulfills the מצוה but should not be made in the first place, because shaping delays the dough and it may become חמץ. The גמרא then discusses which baked goods are exempt from חלה. ריש לקיש and רבי יוחנן argue about dough made in a pot, and עולא defends ריש לקיש by distinguishing between heating the pot first and sticking the dough on first. The amud ends by defining half-baked מצה. רבא applies the same test to the תודה loaves, and his answer to why that teaching is needed begins here and continues on the next amud.
