Why the משנה lists grain-containing items, and which תנא (רבי מאיר or רבי אליעזר) holds that mixtures of חמץ and נוקשה carry only a לאו
Overview
The amud opens by finishing the explanation of the women's hair-removing paste in the משנה. Poor girls used lime, wealthy girls used סולת, and princesses used שמן המור, which is either myrrh oil or oil from unripe olives. A ברייתא of רבי יהושע explains that the משנה lists specific items, even though 'כל שהוא ממין דגן' covers them, so that people learn their names. A story about a visitor who avoided כותח shows why this matters. The גמרא then asks which תנא holds that the listed items carry only a לאו (באזהרה). רב יהודה says רבי מאיר, using a ברייתא about שיאור. רב נחמן says רבי אליעזר, who gives a לאו for a mixture of חמץ. Each אמורא explains why he rejects the other's view, and a ברייתא supports רב יהודה. Finally, the גמרא searches for רבי אליעזר's source in the פסוקים, settling on the word 'כל'. Its defense of that source, about including women, continues on the next amud.
