The חלה dispute and the principle of הואיל, tested through רב חסדא and רבה's argument about baking on יום טוב for a weekday

Overview

This amud opens with the end of the משנה. רבי יהושע rules that separated חלה is not the owner's חמץ, so a woman may let it become leavened without violating בל יראה ובל ימצא. The גמרא first suggests that the dispute with רבי אליעזר is about whether טובת הנאה counts as ממון. It rejects that idea and says instead that they argue about הואיל: since the owner could ask a חכם to cancel the separation, does the חלה still count as his? The גמרא then brings a related dispute about someone who bakes on יום טוב for a weekday. רב חסדא says he gets מלקות because we do not say הואיל. רבה says he does not, because guests might come and eat the bread today. רבה challenges רב חסדא twice. First he asks about baking on יום טוב for שבת, and רב חסדא answers that this is permitted by Torah law and only rabbinically limited, with עירובי תבשילין as a reminder. Second he asks about slaughtering a dying animal, and רב חסדא answers that the fear of money loss makes the owner truly decide to eat a כזית today. The amud ends as רבה begins a third challenge from לחם הפנים, which continues on the next amud.
