יום טוב שני for one who knows the calendar; punishing רב נתן בר אסיא; and explanations of רבי יהודה's view on moving פירות שביעית
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a question about doing מלאכה on יום טוב שני for someone who knows the calendar. רב אמי rules that it is forbidden in a settled area, because of מחלוקת, but permitted in the desert. Next comes a story: רב יוסף punished רב נתן בר אסיא for traveling on the second day of שבועות. In one version he gave נידוי; in the other he gave מלקות. Both versions rely on the practice in ארץ ישראל of flogging a תלמיד חכם rather than excommunicating him. The גמרא then returns to the משנה about carrying פירות שביעית. It asks how רבי יהודה can disagree with the rule that a traveler keeps the strictness of both places. רב שישא answers by moving רבי יהודה's words to a different case, and then, after a challenge, the גמרא reverses the opinions so that רבי יהודה is strict. אביי keeps the text and explains it as a return-trip case, but רב אשי rejects this. רב אשי instead compares the argument to a dispute about three vegetables pickled in one barrel, and רבינא begins comparing it to a dispute about dates in צוער, which continues on the next amud.
