רבי עקיבא's double tithe on an אתרוג, and whether an אתרוג tithed by picking has its new year in תשרי or ט״ו בשבט

Overview

This amud finishes a ברייתא about רבי עקיבא, who picked an אתרוג on the first of שבט and separated two different tithes from it. The ברייתא first says he did this to cover both בית שמאי (new year for trees on א׳ בשבט) and בית הלל (ט״ו בשבט). רבי יוסי בר יהודה gives a different reason: the argument between רבן גמליאל, who tithes an אתרוג by its picking like a vegetable, and רבי אליעזר, who treats it like a tree in everything. The גמרא asks how רבי עקיבא could take the stringencies of both בית שמאי and בית הלל. It answers that he followed בית הלל but was unsure of their date. It then asks why רבי יוסי בר יהודה's version mentions the first of שבט at all. רבי חנינא answers that the fruit formed before the previous ט״ו בשבט, and רבינא answers by reading the date as the fifteenth. Finally, רבה בר רב הונא says that according to רבן גמליאל an אתרוג's new year is תשרי, and the גמרא challenges him with a ברייתא that treats ט״ו בשבט as the dividing line.
