Topic

The end of the story of רבי יוסי and אליהו הנביא, the meaning of 'wicked people' in the משנה's teaching about עיר הנדחת, and a ברייתא about how the wicked and the righteous affect the world. This passage ends with the closing of מסכת סנהדרין.

Overview

This amud opens in the middle of a story. רבי יוסי had taught that אליהו was a קפדן (strict, quick to take offense). אליהו used to visit him, but then stayed away for three days. When he came back, רבי יוסי asked why, and אליהו answered, 'You called me קפדן!' רבי יוסי replied that this very reaction proves the point. The גמרא then goes back to the משנה's line, 'as long as there are רשעים in the world, there is anger in the world,' and asks who these רשעים are. רב יוסף answers: thieves. A ברייתא then teaches four cases, each backed by a פסוק: when a רשע comes, anger comes; when a רשע is gone, good comes; when a צדיק passes away, bad comes; and when a צדיק comes, good comes. The amud ends with the הדרן for פרק חלק and the completion of מסכת סנהדרין.
