פריעה, the fleshy baby, and the ברכות of מילה, followed by the opening of פרק תולין: hanging a wine strainer and the laws of אהל עראי
Overview
The amud opens with the end of the משנה: cutting without פריעה (peeling back the membrane) counts as no מילה at all. רב defines the blocking flesh as flesh covering most of the height of the עטרה. Next, שמואל and רבן שמעון בן גמליאל give mirror-image tests for a fleshy baby, and the גמרא shows that they differ only in an unclear, in-between case. A ברייתא then lists the ברכות said at a ברית: by the מוהל, the father, the people present, and a closing ברכה ending 'כורת הברית', with special versions for גרים and עבדים. After the הדרן, the new פרק תולין begins with a מחלוקת about hanging a wine strainer on יום טוב and שבת. The גמרא asks how רבי אליעזר can allow this when he forbids even adding to a temporary tent. It answers that he follows רבי יהודה on מכשירי אוכל נפש, and is even more lenient than him. Finally, רב יוסף rules that, according to the חכמים, someone who hangs the strainer must bring a חטאת. אביי challenges him with the case of a jug hung on a peg, and the discussion continues on the next amud.
