Old age in קהלת and in stories of the חכמים, the value of youth, and teachings about death and mourning
Overview
This amud is mostly about old age and what comes after it. The גמרא reads the last chapter of קהלת phrase by phrase as a picture of the aging body: ribs, legs, teeth, eyes, stomach, sleep, hearing, and desire. Stories bring the verses to life. רבי יהושע בן חנניה tells the emperor in a riddle that he is too old to debate, and רבי שמעון בן חלפתא tells רבי that rocks now seem tall and his two legs have become three. Sayings about youth teach that it is precious and never returns, and that one should eat well while young. In between, רבי יהושע בן קרחה answers a mocking eunuch insult for insult. ברזילי's words to דוד add more signs of aging. רב says ברזילי was lying, and רבא says he really aged early. A ברייתא teaches that Torah scholars grow wiser with age. The amud ends with death: each צדיק gets his own place in the next world, the soul mourns for seven days, and רב יהודה rules that ten people sit in place of mourners for someone who has none. That story continues on the next amud.
