Which materials count as an אֹהֶל for טומאת מת, whether the תחש was kosher, and finding a source that non-kosher hide becomes טמא in an אהל המת

Overview

This עמוד first finishes proving that linen counts as an אֹהֶל for טומאת מת, through a גזירה שוה from the משכן. The גמרא then tests the limits of that comparison. A רִבּוּי removes the need for six-fold twisted thread, the beams (קרשים) are excluded, and the hide coverings are included through a היקש. Next it examines רבי אלעזר's question about the hide of a non-kosher animal. רב אדא בר אהבה explains that the doubt is whether the תחש was kosher. רב יוסף shows that it was kosher, reading רבי נחמיה's comparison to the תלא אילן as being only about its colors. רבא then tries to prove that non-kosher hide becomes טמא in an אהל המת. Proofs from נגעים alone and from שרצים alone are each refuted, so the גמרא combines them into a צד השוה. רבא מברניש refutes that too, since both spread טומאה with less than a כזית. He begins his own source, which continues on the next עמוד.

The steps (25)

  1. ResponseLinen counts as a tent: learned from the Tabernacle
  2. ChallengeMust the linen be twisted and six-fold like the Tabernacle's?
  3. ResolutionThe repeated word 'tent' widens the rule
  4. ChallengeThen let the widening include every material
  5. ResolutionOtherwise the comparison would be pointless
  6. ChallengeShould beams count as a tent too?
  7. ResolutionThe beams are not called the Tabernacle
  8. ChallengeBy that logic, the covering is not a tent either
  9. ChallengeThen רבי אלעזר's question makes no sense
  10. ResolutionA later verse joins the covering to the tent
  11. Statementרבי אלעזר's question, studied directly
  12. QuestionWhat exactly was his doubt?
  13. ResponseWas the תחש kosher or not?
  14. Challengeרב יוסף: only kosher hides were used
  15. Challengeרבי אבא: the תחש was like the non-kosher תלא אילן
  16. ResolutionSimilar only in its colors
  17. ProofThe תרגום 'ססגונא' fits this
  18. Statementרבא learns it from the laws of צרעת
  19. Rejectionצרעת is stricter, so we cannot learn from it
  20. ResolutionTrying to learn it from שרצים instead
  21. Rejectionשרצים are stricter too
  22. Resolutionצרעת proves the lentil-size point does not matter
  23. ProofBuilding the rule from what both cases share
  24. Rejectionרבא from Barnish: both cases are stricter than a corpse
  25. Statementרבא from Barnish offers a new source
