נולד on יום טוב and the wick-cloth משנה: רבא's singed-wick reason, the dispute between רבי יהודה and רבי שמעון over broken vessels, pits and shells, and רב המנונא's small-scrap explanation
Overview
The גמרא continues discussing whether רבי אליעזר and רבי עקיבא in the wick משנה hold like רבי יהודה that נולד is forbidden on יום טוב. It shows that רב אדא בר אהבה was only explaining the תנאים and does not hold that way himself. רבא gives a different reason for רבי אליעזר: a wick that was not singed may not be lit. רב יוסף's 'exactly three by three' is then explained as a rule about טומאה. רב quotes the dispute between רבי יהודה and רבי שמעון about burning broken vessels, date pits and nutshells, and the גמרא explains why all three cases were needed. It then tells the story with רבי חייא that this teaching came from, and asks whether רב accepted it; the attempted proof is pushed off. The גמרא next shows how whole vessels can be burned according to רבי יהודה, by adding prepared wood following רב מתנה. Finally, רב המנונא explains that the משנה is about a scrap smaller than three by three handbreadths. Each sage follows his own view from a משנה in כלים, and all agree that a scrap thrown into the garbage is טהור.
