שבת 48a: Heat-raising residue, רבה's two rebukes at the ריש גלותא's house, moving מוכין used for הטמנה, refilling pillows, and opening a new collar on שבת

Overview

This amud opens by finishing an answer from the previous amud. Olive residue (גפת) sends heat up to food resting on it, but sesame residue does not. Next comes a two-part story at the house of the ריש גלותא. First, רבה rebukes a servant for putting cold water on a hot kettle, because that creates new heat (אולודי), unlike stacking urns, which only keeps heat (אוקומי). Second, רבה rebukes the servant for spreading a kerchief over a water vat, because people care about keeping a kerchief dry and will squeeze it, unlike a plain cloth (פרונקא). The גמרא then returns to the משנה, and אביי rules that מוכין used for insulating stay מוקצה, since a person does not give them up just because he had no straw. A ברייתא seems to support אביי, but the גמרא shows it can be read another way. Then רב חסדא allows putting stuffing back into a pillow on שבת, and the גמרא settles a contradiction from a ברייתא: stuffing a new pillow is forbidden, but refilling an old one is allowed. Finally, רב rules that opening a new collar on שבת makes one חייב חטאת, and רב כהנא begins an objection that continues on the next amud.
