Is there death without sin? The refutation of רב אמי, followed by רבי יונתן's defense of ראובן and בני עלי from the charge of sin

Overview

On the previous amud, רב אמי taught that there is no death without sin. The גמרא first challenges him from a ברייתא where the angels ask why משה and אהרן died, and answers that רב אמי follows רבי שמעון בן אלעזר, who says they died for their sin at the rock. A second ברייתא lists four people who died only 'בעטיו של נחש', with no sin of their own, including ישי, hinted at by the phrase 'אביגיל בת נחש'. That ברייתא turns out to follow רבי שמעון בן אלעזר himself, so even he admits there is death without sin, and רב אמי is refuted. The גמרא then moves to a series of teachings by רבי יונתן, defending biblical figures who seem to have sinned. ראובן did not sin with בלהה; he only moved his father's bed to protect his mother לאה's honor, and the תנאים argue over how to read the word פחז. Next, בני עלי are defended: חפני and פנחס only delayed the women's bird-offerings. רב proves that פנחס did not sin at all, and each פסוק that seems to include him is explained away. The amud ends as the next statement in the series, about בני שמואל, begins and continues on the next amud.
