Who is exempt from סוכה (מצוה-doers, travelers, guards, the sick and suffering), and the rules of casual eating and sleeping (סוכה 26a)
Overview
This עמוד continues the list of people who are exempt from סוכה. It starts with רבי שילא's view that only the חתן is exempt, and with רבי חנניא בן עקביא's ruling that scribes and sellers of holy items are exempt from other מצוות, based on העוסק במצוה פטור מן המצוה. Ordinary travelers and city guards are exempt only during the hours they travel or guard, but someone traveling for a מצוה is exempt even while resting. Guards of gardens and orchards are always exempt, and אביי and רבא give different reasons why. Next, the גמרא teaches that even a mildly sick person and his attendants are exempt. Then רבא's rule that a מצטער is exempt, though his attendants are not, is defended against the משנה. The גמרא then defines אכילת עראי and explains why even a short nap outside the סוכה is forbidden. That leads to a discussion of sleeping in תפילין, which continues on the next עמוד.
