The ערבה (its source, rules, שיעור, and no ברכה), teachings of אייבו in the name of רבי אלעזר בר צדוק, and the start of the משנה on the לולב in the מקדש
Overview
This amud opens by settling a contradiction in רבי יוחנן's words. The ערבה in the מקדש is a הלכה למשה מסיני, and the ערבה in the גבולין is a תקנת נביאים. רבי אמי then gives three rules: the ערבה needs a שיעור, it is taken by itself, and the ערבה tied into the לולב does not count, even if the לולב is lifted a second time. רב חסדא in the name of רבי יצחק disagrees. On the שיעור, רב נחמן requires three twigs with moist leaves, and רב ששת requires only one leaf on one twig. Stories about רבי אלעזר בר צדוק and רב show that the ערבה is waved without a ברכה, because it is a מנהג נביאים. Through more teachings from אייבו, the גמרא tells of a man worried about villagers hoeing his groves in שביעית and eating his olives. The גמרא explains that hoeing to seal cracks is permitted. It then gives a rule against traveling more than three פרסאות on ערב שבת, with two versions of רב כהנא's comment. Finally it returns to the משנה about arranging the לולבים on the bench in the מקדש, and רב נחמן's reaction to a recited version continues on the next amud.
