סוכה ישנה: must a סוכה be made לשם חג? The sources for בית שמאי and בית הלל, and the comparison to ציצית

Overview

The משנה records a מחלוקת. בית שמאי say an old סוכה (built 30 or more days before סוכות, not for the חג) is פסול, and בית הלל say it is כשר. If it was built for the חג, it is כשר even if it was built a year earlier. The גמרא first gives בית שמאי the פסוק 'חג הסוכות שבעת ימים לה׳'. It then shows that this פסוק teaches everyone that the סוכה's wood is forbidden for other uses all seven days, like the holy חגיגה offering. So בית שמאי's source moves to 'חג הסוכות תעשה לך'. בית הלל use that same פסוק to allow building a סוכה on חול המועד. בית שמאי follow רבי אליעזר, who forbids building on חול המועד. The גמרא then challenges בית הלל from שמואל's rule that ציצית must be spun לשמה. It answers that ציצית have an extra word, לך, that teaches לשם חובך. By סוכה, the word לך is used up to exclude a stolen סוכה, since ציצית have a separate פסוק ('ועשו להם') for that. So for בית הלל, a סוכה does not need to be made לשמה.
