The fast-day שליח ציבור, the twenty-four ברכות, and how the order differs inside and outside the מקדש
Overview
The גמרא finishes explaining רבי יהודה's list of qualities for a fast-day שליח ציבור. It shows that 'his house is empty' means empty of sin, and it explains 'his youth was pleasant.' A פסוק in ירמיהו about a voice God hates is read as describing an unworthy חזן. Next the גמרא asks how the משנה's six added ברכות fit with its mention of a 'seventh' one. רב נחמן בר יצחק answers that the seventh counts the lengthened ברכת גואל ישראל. A ברייתא then lays out the order: each added ברכה ends with 'He Who answered...', the people respond, and the שופר calls switch between תקיעה and תרועה. Outside the מקדש the people answer אמן. In the מקדש they answer 'ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו', based on a פסוק in נחמיה. When רבי חלפתא and רבי חנניה בן תרדיון used the מקדש order in their towns, the חכמים limited it to the מקדש. Finally the גמרא begins to explain why רבי יהודה leaves out זכרונות and שופרות, and the answer continues on the next amud.
