Overview

The amud opens with a problem. The משנה says the כהנים slept with their garments under their heads, but the אבנט may contain כלאים, and חכמים forbade lying on כלאים even with ten mattresses in between. The גמרא gives three answers: the garments were placed next to their heads, or only the garments without כלאים went under them, or (רב אשי) בגדי כהונה are stiff and stiff כלאים is permitted. A ברייתא then proves that benefit from בגדי כהונה inside the מקדש is allowed, though wearing them outside is forbidden. The story of שמעון הצדיק on the day of הר גריזים is explained in two ways: either the garments were only fit to be בגדי כהונה, or it was an emergency of עת לעשות לה׳. The impure כהן leaving through the tunnels supports רבי יוחנן, who says the tunnels were never made holy. The משנה's honorable בית הכסא leads to a story about רב ספרא and רבי אבא. It also leads to advice from רב and רב הונא to their sons on health, modesty, and respect for a teacher. The amud ends by quoting a משנה about the איש הר הבית checking the guards at night, which continues on the next amud.
