The morning ash removal, the גמרא on porticoes in the עזרה and the timing of the חביתין, and the start of the next פרק on clearing the מזבח
Overview
This amud first finishes the משנה's account of the morning clearing of ashes. The waiting כהנים heard the sound of בן קטין's machine for the כיור, and the chosen כהן washed, went up with a silver pan, scooped out the burnt inner coals, and piled them on the floor near the ramp. The גמרא then asks how there could be porticoes (אכסדראות) in the עזרה, when a ברייתא forbids any tree near the מזבח. רב חסדא answers that the משנה means porticoes built of stone. Next the גמרא asks whether the חביתין came before the תמיד של שחר, which must be the first offering of the day. רב יהודה answers that the early step was only heating water for the חביתין. The first פרק then ends. A new משנה describes the other כהנים rushing up the מזבח, moving unburnt limbs and fats aside, and piling the ashes onto the תפוח, which was left in place on the רגלים as a נוי למזבח. The משנה's last sentence continues on the next amud.
