Marriages of a חרש and חרשת: תרומה, כתובה, and אשם תלוי
Overview
The amud opens with the last words of an earlier answer: men would avoid marrying a חרשת if she could do מיאון forever. The גמרא then compares a קטנה and a חרשת, whose marriages are both only מדרבנן. A קטנה married to a כהן eats תרומה, but a חרשת does not. This is explained through a chain of גזירות: a חרש might feed a פקחת wife, and from תרומה דרבנן he could slide into תרומה דאורייתא. Next, a קטנה has a כתובה but a חרשת does not, so that men will not avoid marrying her. The גמרא brings a משנה and a ברייתא as sources. A פקחת married to a חרש also gets no כתובה, because women want to marry even more than men do. רבא praises רב מלכיו for giving a חרש's wife a כתובה from the חרש's own property, since a wife helps him even more than a maidservant. Then שמואל rules about an אשם תלוי for relations with a חרש's wife, in two versions. Both versions are built on רבי אלעזר's view that a חרש's acts are a ספק. The amud ends with רב אשי asking for רבי אלעזר's reason, and his question continues on the next amud.
