The three-month waiting period: minors, converts and freed maidservants, רבי יוסי's reasoning, and the meaning of 'כהנות' in the משנה of switched brides

Overview

The three-month waiting period before a woman remarries exists so that, if she turns out to be pregnant, we know who the father is. The amud opens by saying the רבנן made even a קטנה wait, because of a גדולה. The גמרא challenges this from the משנה about switched brides, where minors went straight back to their husbands. It answers that switched brides are rare, and the רבנן do not make a גזרה for rare cases. A second version of שמואל's teaching then says a קטנה does not wait at all, because זנות with a minor is rare. It also exempts an adult גיורת and משוחררת, and the גמרא explains that שמואל follows רבי יוסי against רבי יהודה. רבה says רבי יוסי assumes such a woman used an absorbent. אביי rejects this from the case of a maidservant freed suddenly through שן ועין, and from the case of an אנוסה. Instead, אביי explains that the woman turns over to avoid pregnancy, while רבי יהודה worries she did not turn over well enough. Finally, the גמרא works out the משנה's word 'כהנות'. רבא explains it as daughters of כהנים married to ישראלים, who lose their right to eat תרומה in their father's house. The amud closes with the הדרן for פרק אַרְבָּעָה אַחִין.

Opening lines

וּגְזַרוּ רַבָּנַן קְטַנָּה מִשּׁוּם גְּדוֹלָה.

And the Rabbis decreed about a minor because of an adult.

וּמִי גָּזְרִינַן קְטַנָּה מִשּׁוּם גְּדוֹלָה?

And do we really decree about a minor because of an adult?

וְהָתְנַן: אִם הָיוּ קְטַנּוֹת

But didn't we learn: If they were minors

שֶׁאֵינָן רְאוּיוֹת לֵילֵד —

who are not able to give birth —
