Proof of conversion, conversion only in a בית דין, a father's believability about his children, and how a בית דין receives a גר

Overview

The עמוד opens in the middle of a ברייתא about someone who says he is a גר. רבי יהודה reads ״בָּאָרֶץ״ to mean that only in ארץ ישראל must he bring proof. The חכמים say proof is needed everywhere. The גמרא works through the ברייתא's readings of the פסוקים, and רבי יוחנן rules like the חכמים. Next, רבי יהודה teaches that a conversion counts only in a בית דין. He tells a man who claimed he converted privately that he is believed about himself but not about his children. The גמרא asks how this fits with רבי יהודה's ״יַכִּיר״ rule, and רב נחמן בר יצחק and רבינא answer in two different ways. The הלכה follows רב נחמן בר יצחק. Finally, a ברייתא describes how a בית דין receives a new גר: it warns him about Jewish suffering, teaches him some מצוות with their punishments and rewards, and the passage continues on the next עמוד.
