Whether women are commanded in פרו ורבו; the end of פרק הבא על יבמתו; and the opening of פרק אלמנה לכהן גדול: why a forbidden wife's עבדי מלוג do not eat תרומה.

Overview

The amud opens with the last word of a story about the twin daughters of רבי חייא's wife. The גמרא then asks whether women are really exempt from פרו ורבו, pointing to a case where the court forced a master to free a half-slave woman. רב נחמן בר יצחק answers that she was freed because men were treating her loosely. The chapter הבא על יבמתו then ends, and the chapter אלמנה לכהן גדול begins. Its משנה rules that when a woman is in a forbidden marriage to a כהן, her עבדי מלוג do not eat תרומה, but her עבדי צאן ברזל do. In a valid marriage all her slaves eat, and a בת כהן married to a ישראל loses תרומה for all her slaves. The גמרא asks why the עבדי מלוג should not eat as 'his acquisition that acquired an acquisition.' It gives three answers: רבינא's rule that only a קנין who eats can let others eat, רבא's rabbinic decree meant to push toward divorce, and רב אשי's decree aimed at a כהנת widow who might wrongly think she can go back to her father's תרומה. The amud ends by opening a new question about appraised property (שום), and רב יהודה's answer continues on the next amud.
